Abdullah Ibrahim - Jazz Fusion (South Africa)

This retrospective of Abdullah Ibrahim's life in music is not only a great introdcution to the music of a giant of jazz but a fantastic album in itself. Drawing on recordings from 1979 to 1997, it covers a period of exile in Ibrahim's life - residing in America to escape the apartheid regime in his native South Africa - and his eventual return home.
Ibrahim occupies an unusual position at the more compostitional end of the Jazz scale, insofar that he writes his music not for the music's sake but to depict scenes, places and people. In my view, he is a modern day Sibelius, Smetena or Dvorak - his minuature "tone poems" are clearly heartfelt evocations of his beloved homeland. Typical of this is quietly reflective "The Mountain" - an orchestral arrangement (From "African Suite") closes the album in the most beguilingly beautiful way possible. Ibrahim's influences are clearly on show too. The self-explanatory (Both in a titular and musical sense) "For Monk" gives him a chance to show off his considerable pianistic talent, whilst tracks such as Pule and Chisa owe a debt, I think, to his mentor Duke Ellington. Whilst not on the Big Band scale of Ellington's compositions (Or Ibrahim's big band album "Ekapa Lodumo"), in these tracks Ibrahim's piano merely provides a musical home for his band members to launch their improvisatory sorties from. This compilation comes highly recommended, showcasing every facet of a great musician: exceptional pianist; composer of inspirational and evocative music, deeply rooted in the rythyms and textures of South Africa; a great band leader. Above all though, you can hear the passion for his homeland - Listen to the beautiful final track and if you don't become completely enraptured, then there's something wrong with you.

¡Los Padrinos! - Rock (Mexico)

¡Los Padrinos! are a band from Léon, Mexico. Their music is inspired by power pop of the 70s and pop music of the 60s. They have just released their first LP Lo Que Vendrá, which means “what will come”. In this post, I’ll review the album and interview the band! Let’s go! Formed originally in 2007. New line-up since 2011: Oye Esteban! (guitar & vox), Daniel LP (the drums), Don Camisa (guitar), Banzi (bass) and Alain Tchido (keyboards.) Noisy and stylish power pop, lo-fi sweet songs.

León band ¡Los Padrinos! (which translates to The Godfathers) were founded a decade ago and have released their first album on 12 May. The album was recorded in 2016 in Guanajuato and produced by Carlo Olmos. The band say that the songs are not just about the halcyon days of the 60s and 70s, but also about the future, and fighting cynicism, apathy, and indifference in today’s climate. The album is a beautiful mix of garage, power pop, blues rock, and more. The lyrics remind me a bit of The Jam with its talking about the modern world and its mod imagery. You won’t regret buying this album and you’ll love the catchiness of the songs. All the tracks are solid and put a modern twist on the classic sounds of 40-50 years ago. Even if you don’t speak Spanish, you should listen to this album.

Dojo Cuts - Funk & Soul (Australia)

The explosive debut album from Sydney funk maestros DOJO CUTS pulls no punches on its way to delivering a string of killer blows. Everything is raw, live and loud in the world of DOJO CUTS. The deepest grooves underpin their distinctive sound while the powerful vocals of Roxie Ray front and center turn up the heat and mercilessly knock you into next week. Featuring their brilliant debut single "1-2-3", a red-hot version of Stevie Wonder´s "Uptight" and a string of originally penned cuts from the King Street Soul Dojo, this is a debut to savour. Bosco Man, Neal Sugarman, Russ Dewbury, Lanu and Craig Charles have already declared themselves fans of the band.

Bass – Guy Kilty
Drums – Ed Halls
Guitar – Nathan Aust
Saxophone – Andrew Symonds
Trumpet – Matthew Parker
Vocals – Roxie Ray

FLAIRCK - Prog Folk • Netherlands

Founded in The Netherlands in 1978
FLAIRCK are a Dutch ensemble formed by Erik Visser, an Indonesian-born acoustic instrumentalist with classical training and a strong interest in many forms of world music. The band released their first studio album 'Variaties Op Een Dame' (Variations on a Lady) in 1978, and has issued more than two dozen studio, live and compilation releases since then.
The band incorporates a number of world influences in their work, which has been described as chamber music but which actually features many styles including classical, folk, jazz and blues, as well as Eastern European and Celtic traditional music. The band primarily performs original compositions, and has worked with a number of renowned world music artists including Georges Moustaki, Nelleke Burg and Dimitri van Toren. The group has also recorded and performed with numerous symphony orchestras and has contributed scores for film, stage and ballet.
Visser and the other band members have a strong interest in obscure and exotic acoustic instruments, and have amassed a collection of more than 150 wind, string and percussion instruments, many of which are used in their studio recordings and live performances.
The band celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2002 with the release of a multi-disciplined DVD dedicated to the Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch. The video features original scores by the band as well acrobatics, detailed views of Bosch's work and interviews of various band members. Visser took advantage of a hiatus by the band in 2003 to release a solo work entitled 'One Man Parade'.
FLAIRCK are a classic example of a progressive musical collective with wide-ranging influences and a constantly evolving sound.

Charles Mingus - Jazz

Charles Mingus Jr. (April 22, 1922 – January 5, 1979) was an American jazz double bassist, pianist, composer and bandleader. A major proponent of collective improvisation, he is considered to be one of the greatest jazz musicians and composers in history, with a career spanning three decades and collaborations with other jazz legends such as Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Dannie Richmond, and Herbie Hancock.

Mingus' compositions continue to be played by contemporary musicians ranging from the repertory bands Mingus Big Band, Mingus Dynasty, and Mingus Orchestra, to the high school students who play the charts and compete in the Charles Mingus High School Competition.

Tijuana Moods is an album by Charles Mingus originally recorded in 1957 but not released until 1962. It was reissued in 1986 on CD as New Tijuana Moods with four alternate takes. 2-CD expanded versions with further alternate takes were issued by RCA in 2000 and by Columbia in 2010. The name "Charlie Mingus" appears on the cover of the original album. Mingus hated all nicknames derived from Charles ("Don't call me Charlie; that's not a man's name, that's a name for a horse"[1]). All songs were composed by Mingus except "Flamingo".
