Jalapeno Soul Sisters (Funk & Soul)

Over the years as a label we’ve come across some of the finest acts around in the Funk, Soul and Jazz world but nothing quite satisfies our musical appetite like a soulful female vocal over a tight groove…

From humble beginnings the Jalapeno Records family has become a glorious melting-pot of styles and genres spanning music designed for both the dancefloor and the lounge. That being said, the lifeblood of the artists on the roster and coursing throughout the entire collection in some shape or form is soul music.

Jalapeno like it all. Classic, psychedelic, neo, slow jams or up-tempo stompers, it really doesn’t matter... No elitism here. And some of our favourite soulful tracks from the catalogue are by our wonderful female contingent (sorry chaps!).

The ‘Jalapeno Soul Sisters’ compilation series is a great way to shine a light on female fronted tracks, both old and new, to introduce the listener to something brand new as well as an artist that may have passed them by, and of course to produce a great listening experience as a whole.
\\his third instalment promises to be just as bountiful as the last. Featuring tracks from the likes of current label ladies - Izo FitzRoy, Gizelle Smith and Alexia Coley, alongside some brilliant guest appearances from Laura Vane, Sarah Scott, Dena Deadly, and Sitzka.

Cais Sodré Funk Connection - Funk & Soul (Portugal)

Cais do Sodré Funk Connection are a Lisbon 9-piece Soul/Funk band. Directly from the steets of Lisbon with funky sounds!

Born in the heart of the bohemian neighborhood that gives them their name, CAIS SODRÉ FUNK CONNECTION is a band of veterans of Portuguese music and true ambassadors of Funk & Soul.
Soul Power is assured by Francisco Rebelo on Bass, João Gomes on Keys, David Pessoa on Guitar, Rui Alves on Drums and the thrilling wind section by João Cabrita, José Raminhos and Miguel Marques. Conducted by the unmistakable one man show SILK, they are accompanied by TAMIN's sensual and seductive voice.

Strictly dressed, they take the stage to ignite audiences, whether in the early parts of Sharon Jones or Lionel Ritchie, or in partnership with renowned artists such as Rickie Calloway, Paulo de Carvalho and most recently Eduardo Nascimento and António Calvário at the Festival. of Song 2019.

In 2012 they released “YOU ARE SOMEBODY”, the presentation disc that took them to radio and affirmed them as a solid national project.
The second album “SOUL, SWEAT & CUT THE CRAP” released in 2016 with 13 original songs, gained an increasingly loyal following and established them as an amazing Live Band. With the video for “Offbeat”, a single extracted from this album by Richard F. Coelho, they gained international recognition with the award for best music video at the Cannes Short Film Festival.

Ike & Tina Turner - Funk & Soul

Ike & Tina Turner were an American musical duo active during the 1960s and 1970s, consisting of the husband-and-wife team Ike Turner and Tina Turner. Rolling Stone ranked them #2 on their list of the "20 Greatest Duos of All Time" in 2015.

They performed live as the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, supported by Ike Turner's band the Kings of Rhythm and backing singers, the Ikettes. The Ike & Tina Turner Revue was regarded as "one of the most potent live acts on the R&B circuit". Their live performances were a musical spectacle in the style of James Brown and the Famous Flames.

The duo's early works, "A Fool In Love," "It's Gonna Work Out Fine," and "I Idolize You," became high points in the development of soul music. Their later works were noted for interpretive re-arrangements of rock songs such as "Come Together," "Honky Tonk Woman," and "Proud Mary," the latter of which won them a Grammy Award in 1972. Ike Turner and Tina Turner's professional and personal relationship ended in 1976, and their divorce was finalized in 1978.

Ike & Tina Turner were inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1991. They have two singles inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, "River Deep – Mountain High" and "Proud Mary."

The Spirit Of Atlanta - The Burning Of Atlanta

While essentially a vanity project for composer/producer/arranger Thomas Stewart, backed here by a cadre of "Hot 'Lanta" session players, The Burning of Atlanta is nevertheless an excellent funk LP that boasts the panoramic scope of a classic blaxploitation soundtrack. With the vocals embedded deep in the mix, the emphasis lies squarely on the record's intensely hypnotic grooves -- most of the tracks extend past the five-minute mark, with the epic "Messin' Around" clocking in at nearly twice that total. Stewart's dramatic melodies also boast a sheen recalling Curtis Mayfield's classic Superfly -- and just in case you couldn't place the reference, there's even an answer song: "Freddie's Alive and Well."

Totally great – and a record you probably know nothing about! The album's one of the greatest ever to come out of the Hotlanta scene of the 70s – a tight batch of funk tracks with a heck of a lot of guitar. The set was produced by Tommy Stewart, of "Bump and Hustle" fame – and it's got an unusual style that's equally appealing to fans of funk, and fans of clubbier music – lots of tight playing, hard riffing, and longer grooves that soar along with impeccable grace. The whole thing's almost like the classic Wood Brass & Steel album – but with some rougher edges that make it even better! Includes the great tracks "Vine City" and "Messin Around", both of which are very long funk tracks, plus shorter cuts that are just as funky, like "Down Underground", "Freddie's Alive and Well", and "Buttermilk Bottom". Don't pass this up, it's a funky monster classic!

Unknown (practically) funk masterpiece -- great songwriting and the band stretches out on "Vine City" and "Messin Around." (around 9 min. ea.) Brass and strings arrangements are intelligent and tasteful, nothing overdone here. Just a good funky groove when players could play. It's hip.
