IMPROVED SOUND LIMITED - Krautrock • Germany

Improved Sound Limited biography (http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2760)

This Nuremberg group began to play together as early as 1961 under the name Blizzards. They used the name Improved Sound Limited from 1966 onwards. In the late sixties, they specialised in delivering soundtracks for German television and movies by Michael Verhoeven. "Engelchen Macht Weiter, Hoppe, Hoppe Reiter" (1969) was the soundtrack from a Verhoeven film, released on the same label as the first Gomorrah album. I don't know this one (presumably a late beat rock effort), but their self-titled double album for Liberty was very inspired by the American folk-rock of Bob Dylan and The Band. Dylan was mentioned several times in the clever lyrics (from now on written by Axel's brother Bernd), for example, in "Doctor Bob Dylan". Improved Sound Limited also merged some more European elements into their folky rock style, such as some fine flute phrases. Regrettably, their passion for American music led them closer to country music on "Catch A Singin' Bird" (1973). Quite good compositions and lyrics ("The Dark Lord" was about Tolkien's "Lord Of The Rings"!), but not exactly performed in the idle way most of us like, I'm afraid. Pedal steel guitar was played by Frank Baum and Ralph Nowy guested on trumpet and sax. Improved Sound Limited changed their name to Condor in 1976 and released a much worse album: "Rathbone Hotel" (1976).

Electric Mud - Krautrock, Prog Rock (Germany)

ELECTRIC MUD are a 1970s German Krautrock band with a classic energetic hard rock sound. Their only album was released in 1971, a self-titled album from the label Lost Pipe Dreams, with some simplistic but creepy cover art of a screaming face with a snake crawling into the mouth and exiting the eyeball. The artists involved on the album include Jochen Dyduch on drums, Axel Helm on organ, piano, Udo Preising on bass, vocals, and Manfred Simhäuser on guitar. The powerful guitar sound is reminiscent of heavy bands NECRONOMICON and VIRUS. There are only four tracks on the album though some are length and have a very progressive structure. "Hausfrauenreport" has a sound akin to GENESIS' "Foxtrot". The vocals of Udo Preising are prominent and the keyboards have a forceful presence throughout the album. ELECTRIC MUD are another of the early 70s Krautrock groups that released only one album and disappeared from the scene. The music should appeal to lovers of Krautrock with a harder edge and an emphasis on guitar driven rock.

Bass, Vocals – Uwe Preising
Drums – Jochen Dyduch
Guitar – Manfred Simhäuser
Organ, Electric Piano [E-Piano] – Axel Helm

Faust - Krautrock (Germany)

Faust (English: "fist") are a German krautrock band. Formed in 1971 in Wümme, the group was originally composed of Werner "Zappi" Diermaier, Hans Joachim Irmler, Arnulf Meifert, Jean-Hervé Péron, Rudolf Sosna and Gunther Wüsthoff, working with record producer Uwe Nettelbeck and engineer Kurt Graupner.

The Faust Tapes is the third album by the German krautrock group Faust, released in 1973. The album sold well in the United Kingdom (60,000 copies) because of a marketing gimmick by Virgin Records that saw it go on sale for the price of a single. This exposure introduced British audiences to Faust. Recommended Records reissued the album on LP in 1980, and on CD in 1996 and 2001, both mastered from vinyl sources. The Recommended LP reissue used a brand new cover design and was packaged in an oversized plastic bag. Neither CD edition included the original LP artwork; the 1996 CD used the cover art from the second "Faust Party 3" extract single as the front cover and the 2001 CD used the cover art from the Munic and Elsewhere album as the front cover. The Virgin and Recommended LP releases, and the first Recommended CD release had no track titles. The Faust Tapes consists of segments of songs woven together in pieces spread out over two sides of the LP.

Faust (German for "fist") is the 1971 debut album of German krautrock group Faust. Although it was never a commercial success, Faust has garnered much critical acclaim from rock critics. In 1971, Polydor entered a deal with Uwe Nettelbeck to assemble a musical ensemble that could compete with the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, and Small Faces. Before the release of their debut, Faust would send tapes to Polydor containing anything from studio experiments to recordings of someone washing dishes. The impact of Faust cannot be overstated; their debut album was truly a revolutionary step forward in the progress of "rock music". It was pressed on clear vinyl, packaged in a clear sleeve, with a clear plastic lyric insert. The black X-ray of a fist on the cover graphically illustrates the hard core music contained in the grooves, an amalgamation of electronics, rock, tape edits, acoustic guitars, musique concrete, and industrial angst. The level of imagination is staggering, the concept is totally unique and it's fun to listen to as well.

Krautrock - Music for Your Brain (All 5 BOXES)

Krautrock was (and still is) a musical phenomenon that sprouted in Germany in the late '60's and early '70's. Combining elements of Psychedelia, Prog Rock, Art Rock and Avante-Garde, Krautrock became a movement unto itself. This collection (with 4 boxes with 6 CDs) anthology features cuts from Nektar, Franz K., Guru Guru, Eloy, Pell Mell, and many others. Great too see Amon Duul 2, Eloy ( 2 tracks from first album ), Embryo, Guru Guru, Popul Vuh, Faust , Jane, Klaus Schulze, on here. A perfect starter too get into Krautrock.
_________________________________________________________________________________
This is an extraordinary compilation of the genre known as 'Krautrock'. On four Boxes with six CDs in nearly 480 minutes per box, you will find an overview of all the great music of the 'Deutschrock'-phase.

It has never happened before that such a huge spectrum of bands and artists of so many varying styles within the genre is found on one compilation. So, it is an absolute highlight for fans and beginners!

Even the history is outstanding and unique. Andreas Baumann from Target Music asked me some months ago, whether I would be interested in creating an ultimate list of the 'Krautrock', to be used for an upcoming release of a 6CD - compilation. He introduced me to Rudolf Vogel, who lives in the south of Germany. He knew Rudi by pure chance. This was absolutely amazing for me, and we got perfect partners for this task. Rudi was completely familiar with the scenes in the south and I knew everything of the north. So we matched in every way. After a few weeks the work was finished and we presented a list of 300 titles which would represent their overview of 'Krautrock'. Hard to believe, but we never had troubles or disputes about titles or bands to put in this list.

When this was done, it was time to search for the rights of these tracks. Responsible for this was Uwe Grünert from Universal, who supported us all the time and was passionately involved in the project. He was able to secure the right to use 67 of them - enough to build this collection. Rudi and I worked on the tracklists of the six CDs and on what we considered the ideal song distribution. We were totally free in our decisions. So you will not find any filler on this compilation, only tracks which were hand-picked by Rudi and I.
Rudi, who is already a member of our association, Andreas and I enjoyed this perfect and unique teamwork. We, of the German Rock association, were always informed about every phase of this project, and we were even involved in the design and the layout. For this, Rudi and I would like to thank Target Music!

So, in the name of the German Rock association, I give an absolute recommendation to this compilation. I hope that it will be very successful, so that the rest of our list will be out in following releases.

Kurt Mitzkatis
President of the German Rock association

Phantom Band - Electronic, Krautrock (Germany)

Things changed a lot for Phantom Band in less than a year. Original bassist/singer Rosko Gee left and was replaced by spoken-word artist Sheldon Ancel, remaining bass-less. This lineup change made it possible for the band to align its actual sound with its experimental leanings. The situation can be summed up by comparing the first two albums' opening tracks. The lead-in track on the group's 1980 debut LP was the Gee-penned midtempo song "You Inspired Me," clearly meant as a crowd-pleaser and potential hit single. The lead-in track on "Freedom of Speech" is the title track, a vocodered rant on how the government knows what's best for us, presented over a disquieting rhythm track. The tone is set: Freedom of Speech is a darker, edgier record. It retains the Krautrock-gone-dub feel of the first album, but drops all pretensions of charting to present a more mature, better asserted group sound wrapped in a production that has aged much better than the debut LP. Ancel is not a rapper, but a spoken-word performer: he embodies characters, and uses effects to dress up his voice. It works very well, especially on the dub-laden "Brain Police," the angry "Gravity" (a love story at its sour end), and the electro-freak "Dream Machine." Freedom of Speech is a stunning avant rock record informed by the New York no wave scene and the European reggae/dub scene, with Can's history in genre-pushing repetitive rock serving as the foundation.
