Missing Link - Prog Jazz Rock (Germany)

This early 70's jazz-rock band from Munich has had a rather short career; in fact, it lasted the space of an album called "Nevergreen", released in 1972. Then the band broke up, most of their members scatttering about in various directions. They consisted of guitarist Markus Sing, soprano and alto sax player Gunther Latuschik, bassist Dave Schratzenstaller, vocalist Gabriel Dominik Mueller, future SAHARA drummer Holger Brandt, and keyboard player Dieter Miekautsch who would later join MISSUS BEASTLY and then EMBRYO.

They played typical 70's German progressive jazz rock in the style of THIRSTY MOON, early EMBRYO and KRAAN. Almost each of their album's seven tracks seems to explore a different genre, at times centering around some jazzy sax riffs, at times surprising the listener with a quiet piano solo; or else venturing into loud, heavy rock outbursts mixed with acoustic guitar. The overall feel is quite jazzy and what stands out most is the interplay between guitar, sax and keyboards.

Should appeal to fans of EMBRYO and THIRSTY MOON as well as to some ARDO DOMBEC and XHOL fans.

Mersmak - Sweden Prog Folk

A six-piece act from the city of Kalmar, which released on single and an LP on the Frog label, somewhere between soft Scandinavian Folk Rock and more upbeat Psych Rock with progressive touches.Too many tracks, somewhat cutting the song development short, and bluesy and Country references prevail over the proggy touches.Lots of electric and acoustic guitars, electric piano, cello and male/female vocals, non-offensive atmospheres and decent songwriting, but the overall result is safe to say the least.Their guitarist Dan Jonsson played with Ragnarök in early-80’s…by…apps79 ..~

Ike Turner & The Kings Of Rhythm - Blues & Funk

With scorching guitar licks and menacing vocals, Ike Turner brings a nasty, swaggering edge to Here and Now, his first album of new music since 1978. From jumped-up shuffles like “Tore Up” and the instrumental “Ike’s Theme” to his rollicking piano features “Baby’s Got It” and “Swanee River Boogie,” the swampy “You Can’t Winnum’ All” and a revved-up remake of his “Rocket 88,” Turner wails with bluesy authority and star quality. He even turns in a version of “Catfish Blues” that rivals Muddy and Wolf for sheer ferocious intensity. Here and Now certainly qualifies for comeback of the year, if not blues record of the year. /Bill Milkowski, JazzTimes.

Joss Stone - Soul & Blues

Joscelyn Eve Stoker (born 11 April 1987), better known by her stage name Joss Stone, is an English singer, songwriter and actress. She rose to fame in late 2003 with her multi-platinum debut album, The Soul Sessions, which made the 2004 Mercury Prize shortlist. Her second album, the similarly multi-platinum Mind Body & Soul (2004), topped the UK Albums Chart for one week and spawned the top ten hit "You Had Me", Stone's most successful single on the UK Singles Chart to date. Both the album and single received one nomination at the 2005 Grammy Awards, while Stone herself was nominated for Best New Artist, and in an annual BBC poll of music critics, Sound of 2004,[7] was ranked fifth as a predicted breakthrough act of 2004.[7] She became the youngest British female singer to top the UK Albums Chart. Stone's third album, Introducing Joss Stone, released in March 2007, achieved gold record status by the RIAA and yielded the second-ever highest debut for a British female solo artist on the Billboard 200, and became Stone's first top five album in the US.

The Soul Sessions is the debut studio album by English singer and songwriter Joss Stone. It was released on 16 September 2003 by S-Curve Records. The album consists of cover versions of soul songs from the 1960s and 1970s, in addition to a cover of The White Stripes' 2001 song "Fell in Love with a Girl". In 2004, The Soul Sessions was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and was nominated for a MOBO Award for Best Album.

LE MATCH - Prog Folk • Canada

LE MATCH was born in 1974 from the ashes of LA NOUVELLE FRONTIÈRE, a 7-piece folk band who comprised, among others, the famous Québécois twins Marie-Claire and Richard Séguin. The twins were heavily into folk whereas their keyboard player, Normand Théroux, decided he wanted a heavier sound. LA NOUVELLE FRONIÈRE thus split up into two camps: the twins carrying on as a duo called LES SÉGUIN, and Théroux forming LE MATCH alongwith fellow musicians Pierre-Yves Migneron on guitar and vocals, Gaston Rousseau on bass, Jacques Lauzon on drums and Francis Leduc on violin and flute.

Their sole album "Légendes", released in 1974, is strongly influenced by traditional Québec folk but also has definite progressive moments, lots of keyboards, violin and flute. At the time, it was best known for a track called "Le soleil des plants d'huile", a song about Montreal's east-end oil refineries. It is quite a straightforward folk-prog album, a bit "quaint" at heart - the way bands such as TEMPEST or HORSLIPS are - and quite melodic overall.

Not absolutely essential but certainly of interest if you like to explore French Canadian prog-folk bands of the early 70's.
