Tripcycle - Jazz Fusion Rock (Serbia)

TRIPCYCLE are a trio from Novi Sad, Serbia; they were formed in 2005.

The phenomenon of TRIPCYCLE's music could be traced for 20 years - they're a logical continuation of rich Serbian underground scene: while there are traces of punk music with avangarde edge such is SARLO AKROBATA or DISCIPLINA KIÈME, there's even more evident seal of 90's/early 00's eclectic movement which merged trip-hop with electronica, avant rock, jazz, dub, jam sessions and many other musical staples (DARKWOOD DUB, VROOOM). The music of TRIPCYCLE is organic and unique - yet self-evident as an evolution of (good) local scene. A step further which differentiates TRIPCYCLE from already mature, thoughtful and rounded-up artists is their bravery to embrace wider scope of musical influences, which was referenced only in shy traces in the previous decade: they're openly citing art-rock peak artists, such are David BOWIE and Robert FRIPP, as well as the most daring visionaries of jazz fusion, both old and new.

TRIPCYCLE will smoothly shift their musical observations between nu-jazz, post-rock, art-rock, raw trancey electronic soundscapes and psychedelia in an organic watermark of their own signature artistic statement.

The band is also notable for their live performances and the visual component. They were doing music for various short movies. Their first release, 'Beep' saw the light of the day in 2009. Highly recommended.

tripcycle : Darko Jovanović (guitar and electronic sound), Dejan Ćirjaković (drums), Dragana Gogic( vokal)

AERA - Jazz Rock/Fusion • Germany

Volume 2 of the Bavarian broadcast series present further recordings of Area, for once from the period 1977-1979. Five live tracks from 2 concerts and four tracks recorded in Bavarian Broadcast Corporation owned studio 'Franken' 'at Nuremberg'. Aera played a lively jazz-rock dominated by soloist and sax and flute player Klaus Kreuzeder, based on powerful and clever keyboard playing all held together by amazing bass player Matz Steinke and drummer Lutz Oldemeier (of Missus Beastly-fame) and lots of percussions. Aera were in a very good shape and gave their best. Highlights are the 17 minutes long version of 'Dracula´s Frühstück' and nearly 10 minutes version of 'You need some speed'. All titles were digitally remastered from the original tapes. Booklets contains the history of the recordings and rare photos. Highly recommended!

Accurate progressive Jazz Rock & Fusion with flute as the prominent instrument from this Austrian quartet out of the city of Krems. The sound relies on the impressive interplays between electric/acoustic piano and the flute of Thomas Schwebisch, which often come close to perfection and recall of GOTIC's melodic flute drives, while there are sporadic synth layers to be found. Some deep Funk lines are also in the menu. The overall mood is romantic and the technical level is way above this of average groups.

Protofonia - Instrumental Jazz Prog (Brazil)

PROTOFONIA is a trio of instrumental music, a laboratory, a safe place where labels can be stripped: a blank canvas and three brushes, endless colors. Protophony agrees with everything related to experimentalism and improvisation: Free Music! Formed at the height of Brasilia's drought in 2007, Andre Chayb (guitar, ukelele, theremin, keyboard, noise), Janari Coelho (drums, percussion, landscapes and sound interventions, noise) and Andre Gurgel (bass, guitar, keyboard, plastics, Noises), all with vast experience in the music scene of the Federal District, work with very influential instrumental music of jazz in all its aspects, blues, progressive rock, free improvisation, contemporary classical and electroacoustic music. In developing their themes there is always room for explosion and silence, creating bold colors and unpredictable textures that catch the attention of the audience from beginning to end of each song.

Protofonia, in addition to participating in several local shows and festivals, acted by designing the soundtrack of the musical Macufagia, Macunaima's rereading, masterpiece by writer Mario de Andrade, directed by Uruguayan director Hugo Rodas. The experience paved the way for the trio's foray into songwriting and soundtracking, in partnership with performing and visual arts groups. This first album brings together compositions that started to be recorded in 2008, when the group established itself as a trio after a sequence of several formations (it became a quintet, with two drums, two guitars and bass). The tracks Modern Anthropophagy, Riding the Flexible Machine, Doce Carne and Jardim de Maytrea were recorded at Octogono Studio in 2008. In 2009, at C.L. Audio, were recorded Eugenia, Tell Nothing to Your Sister, Waste Shredder and On Stage Behind the Eyes. That same year the group broke up. The members followed their individual projects and only met again in 2012. New compositions emerged, but there was still that shelved project. Although the tracks still sound quite raw and unfinished, the high quality of the capture motivated the continuation of the process. The material was taken to the Zimmer-Collen studio, where in two months some soil overdubs, electroacoustic effects insertions, noise, flutes, theremin, percussion, mixing and mastering were made. The first album "Protofonia" was finalized in April 2013.

Recorded and Mixed in 2014/2015 at the studio Zimmer-Collen (Ceilandia / DF) by Oldair Vieira (Dei), Produced by Pedro Baldanza, legendary Brazilian rock bassist, member of the Som Nosso de Cada Dia group. Analog mastering by Dudu Maia at Casa do Som Studio (Brasilia / DF), pressed in 300 copies of 180g by Polysom (RJ) with the art of Eduardo Belga on the cover.

Phish - Prog Jazz Jam Band

Lawn Boy is Phish's second official studio album, released on September 21, 1990, on the Absolute A Go Go Records and Rough Trade labels on cassette, single-LP vinyl and CD (with CD bonus track Fee). Vinyl LPs of the original Absolute A Go Go release are still known to circulate. The album was later re-mastered by Bob Ludwig and re-released on CD and cassette by Elektra Records June 30, 1992. The songs on Lawn Boy include many of the progressive rock and fusion elements featured on the band's first studio album, Junta, as well as incorporating elements of bluegrass, jazz and barbershop quartet. According to Phish Archivist Kevin Shapiro: Lawn Boy was recorded and mixed at Archer Studios in Winooski, VT in 1989 and 1990 on 16-track 2" tape and was mixed to 1/4" stereo reels. The band won the initial studio time with a first-place Rock Rumble performance on April 21, 1989 at a downtown Burlington, VT club called The Front. The Lawn Boy sessions that followed consisted of mostly live takes with a few effects and overdubs. Engineer Dan Archer acquired a baby grand piano specifically for the recording, Fishman played his drums squeezed into a vocal isolation booth and the band utilized local musicians including members of what would soon be called the Giant Country Horns. Like Junta before it, Phish self-produced Lawn Boy on a hands-on level, surrounding the console for group fades without aid of automation. The album was certified gold by the RIAA on July 7, 2004. In February 2009, Lawn Boy became available as a download in FLAC and MP3 formats at LivePhish.com. JEMP Records released "Lawn Boy" on Record Store Day 2013 as a Limited Edition Deluxe 2-LP vinyl set. The LE Deluxe 2-LP vinyl set was limited to 7,500 individually numbered copies and was created from the original 1/4" stereo master reels with lacquers cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Each LP is pressed onto 180g audiophile grade vinyl. Deluxe packaging includes an 8-page photo booklet and an etched D-side.

DAVID SANCIOUS - Jazz Rock/Fusion • United States

David Sancious was born on November 30, 1953 in Asbury Park NJ. When he was still in his teens he was asked to join Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band as a keyboardist and occaisonal saxophonist. He stayed with that band for their first three albums. In 1974 Sancious split from Springsteen and formed David Sancious and Tone with drummer Ernest Carter and bassist Gerald Carboy. Tone's music was comparable to other 70's bands that mixed progressive rock and jazz fusion; ie Return to Forever, Bill Bruford, Camel, Jean Luc Ponty, Alan Holdsworth and Mahavishnu Orchestra. Sancious' keyboard playing revealed many influences such as French neo-classical piano music, Gospel and fellow synth/keyboardists Chick Corea, Keith Emerson and Jan Hammer. Playing in Tone also gave David the freedom to show off his talents as a guitarist as well. His guitar style owes a lot to Jimi Hendrix, as well as Jeff Beck and John McLaughlin.

Tone never got the recognition they deserved, but fortunately Sancious continues to remain in the limelight because of his highly valued sideman work with people like Sting, Peter Gabriel, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, Seal, Eric Clapton, Jon Anderson and many more.
