The History of Flo & Eddie and The Turtles


Flo & Eddie (Mark Volman, Flo aka Phlorescent Leech, and Howard Kaylan, Eddie) are a comedic musical duo. The two were the original founding members of the Top 40 rock group the Turtles. After the Turtles dissolved, Volman and Kaylan first joined the Mothers of Invention (also HERE) as Phlorescent Leech & Eddie. Due to contractual restrictions made early in their career, Mark and Howard were prevented from using the name 'the Turtles', as well as their own names in a musical context.  When bandleader Frank Zappa was injured during a concert in London in 1971, Kaylan and Volman found themselves at an impasse, as the Mothers of Invention were out of action for a time. They responded to these events by recording The Phlorescent Leech & Eddie on Reprise Records with most of the other members of the Mothers of Invention. Although it failed to chart, they continued releasing albums, including the more successful Flo & Eddie, Illegal, Immoral and Fattening, Moving Targets, and Rock Steady with Flo & Eddie.During the 1970s, Kaylan and Volman continued to do session work. They were the house band for the Canadian TV talk show 90 Minutes Live with Peter Gzowski. In 1982, they released a four-song EP on Rhino Records (RNEP 603) under the name Checkpoint Charlie. The record is a dark but whimsical take on late 70s / early 80s German synth techno new wave music, such as D.A.F. and Kraftwerk.

In 1984, as the Turtles ...featuring Flo & Eddie, (together with three other groups from the 1960s: Gary Puckett, Spanky and Our Gang, and the Association), they traveled across the US and Canada as "The Happy Together Tour". The following year they got together with the Buckinghams, Gary Lewis and the Grass Roots, for a 1985 version. For the eight months the tour was on the road, it was consistently one of the top 10 grossing tours in the country. During the summers of 2010 and 2011, Flo & Eddie had heavy touring schedules throughout the U.S. both as part of the Happy Together: 25th Anniversary Tour, along with the Grass Roots, Mark Lindsay, the Buckinghams, and Monkees member Micky Dolenz (2010 only). They also created the music for the films Down and Dirty Duck and The Adventures of the American Rabbit.









The History of Flo & Eddie and the Turtles (1983)


The History of Flo & Eddie and the Turtles was a three-LP box set album from Flo & Eddie, issued in 1983 by Rhino Records. The first LP contained songs from their 1963 debut album Out of Control, under the band name The Crossfires, and songs from their first post-Turtles album, The Phlorescent Leech and Eddie, from 1972. The second LP contained songs from their next 3 albums: Flo and Eddie (1973), Illegal, Immoral and Fattening (1975) and Moving Targets (1976). The final LP in the set was a special one, containing excerpts from The Flo & Eddie Radio Show. This box set has never been reissued on CD.

Presented here are the first two albums by Flo & Eddie, “The Phloroscent Leech and Eddie” (1972) and  “Flo & Eddie” (1974), as reissued in a 2-CD set by FloEdCo, 2008.

The Phlorescent Leech and Eddie is the first album from Flo & Eddie, released in 1972. It was made available on CD for the first time in 2008.

Flo & Eddie is the second album from Flo & Eddie. After being out of print since the 1970s, it was released on CD for the first time in 2008 in a package that includes their first album, The Phlorescent Leech & Eddie (1972). The album was produced by Bob Ezrin, who was the producer for Alice Cooper. The album was made to accompany the Alice Cooper Billion Dollar Babies world tour in 1973-74, which Flo & Eddie were the opening act.

A ano de 1979 se incia com lançamentos não autorizados por Zappa, da Warner Bros Records: Sleep Dirt em 1979, com suítes complexas de tons instrumentais gravados entre 1973 e 1976, e que foram negligenciados em meio aos problemas legais e Orchestral Favorites, de 1979, no qual apresentava gravações de um concerto com música orquestral realizado em 1975.

Resolvidos com sucesso os problemas judiciais, Zappa terminou os anos 1970 "mais forte do que nunca", lançando dois dos seus álbuns de mais sucesso: o mais vendido de sua carreira, Sheik Yerbouti, e a "obra-prima de boa fé", Joe's Garage, ambos de 1979. O álbum duplo Sheik Yerbouti foi o primeiro lançado pelo selo Zappa Records, e contém o single "Dancin' Fool", que foi indicado ao Grammy e chegou à posição 45 nos rankings da Billboard, e "Jewish Princess" ("Princesa Judia", em tradução livre), que recebeu atenção quando a Anti-Defamation League (Liga Antidifamação - ADL), grupo formado por judeus, tentou impedir a canção de ir ao ar nas rádios devido à conotação alegadamente antissemita da sua letra. Zappa negou veementemente sentimentos antissemitas e caracterizou a ADL como "uma organização fazedora de barulho que tenta aplicar pressão nas pessoas para produzir uma imagem estereotipada dos judeus". O sucesso comercial do álbum foi atribuído em parte ao single "Bobby Brown". Devido à sua letra explícita sobre o encontro de um jovem com uma "lésbica chamada Freddie" (em inglês, a "dyke named Freddie"; "dyke" é um termo em gíria utilizado para referir-se a uma lésbica masculinizada), a canção não foi ao ar nos EUA, mas entrou na lista dos mais vendidos em alguns países da Europa onde o inglês não é a língua mãe. O LP triplo Joe's Garage apresenta o cantor principal Ike Willis como a voz do personagem "Joe" em uma ópera rock sobre o perigo dos sistemas políticos e a supressão da liberdade de expressão; ele foi inspirado em parte pela Revolução Islâmica, a qual tornou ilegal a música dentro da sua jurisdição naquela época, e também na "estranha relação que os americanos têm com sexo e franqueza sexual". O álbum contém canções como "Catholic Girls" ("Garotas Católicas, em tradução livre - uma resposta às controvérsias de "Jewish Princess"), "Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up", e a faixa-título, assim como uma gravação longa de improvisações de guitarra combinadas com uma banda de apoio de estúdio liderada pelo baterista Vinnie Colaiuta (com quem Zappa tinha uma boa conexão musical), adotando o processo da xenocronia. O álbum contém uma das mais famosas canções de Zappa na guitarra, "Watermelon in Easter Hay".

Based on the principle, that if we were all crooks, we could at last be uniform to some degree in the eyes of The Law. Em 21 de dezembro de 1979, o filme de Zappa Baby Snakes estreou em Nova Iorque. A frase promocional do filme era "Um filme sobre pessoas que fazem coisas que não são normais". Com duas horas e 40 minutos, ele baseava-se em sequências de shows em Nova Iorque no final de outubro - início de novembro - de 1977. Também continha cenas de claymation feitas por Bruce Bickford que anteriormente tinha feito animações para Zappa, em um especial de TV de 1974 (que depois se tornaria disponível no vídeo The Dub Room Special - 1982). O filme não foi bem na distribuição pelos cinemas, mas ganhou o Premier Grand Prix no Primeiro Festival de Música Internacional de Paris, em 1981. A família Zappa lançou-o em DVD em 2003.

Depois de passar a maior parte de 1980 em turnês, Zappa lançou Tinsel Town Rebellion, em 1981. Foi o primeiro lançamento do seu selo próprio Barking Pumpkin Records, e contém canções tiradas de turnês de 1979 e 1980 e uma faixa de estúdio. O álbum é uma mistura de instrumentais complicados e o uso de sprechstimme (canção ou voz falada) por parte de Zappa — uma técnica composicional utilizada por compositores como Arnold Schoenberg e Alban Berg — mostrando algumas das mais talentosas bandas que Zappa já tivera (contando, na maior parte, com o baterista Vinnie Colaiuta). Apesar de algumas letras ainda levantarem controvérsias entre críticos, no sentido de que alguns acharam-nas sexistas, as sátiras políticas e sociológicas como observadas na faixa-título e em "The Blue Light" têm sido descritas como uma "crítica hilária da complacência das pessoas americanas de acreditar em qualquer coisa". O álbum também é notável pela presença do guitarrista Steve Vai, que se juntou à banda de Zappa em turnê no final de 1980.

No mesmo ano de 1981, o disco duplo You Are What You Is foi lançado. Ele foi gravado na sua maior parte nos novos estúdios Utility Muffin Research Kitchen (algo como "Cozinha de Pesquisa para as Utilidades do Bolinho" - UMRK), que se localizavam na sua casa, dando assim completa liberdade para Zappa trabalhar. O álbum incluía um instrumental complexo, "Theme from the 3rd Movement of Sinister Footwear", mas se focava principalmente em canções de rock com o comentário social irônico de Zappa - letras satíricas tendo como alvo adolescentes, a mídia, e a hipocrisia política e religiosa. "Dumb All Over" é uma denúncia da religião, assim como "Heavenly Bank Account", na qual Zappa investe contra televangelistas tais como Jerry Falwell e Pat Robertson pela sua suposta influência na administração dos EUA, e também pelo seu uso da religião como meio de ganhar dinheiro. Canções como "Society Pages" e "I'm a Beautiful Guy" mostram o desânimo de Zappa com a era Ronald Reagan e a sua "perseguição obscena de riqueza e felicidade" Um video clip foi gravado com a música "You Are What You Is"...

Em 1981, Zappa também lançou três álbuns instrumentais, Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar, Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar Some More, e The Return of the Son of Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar, os quais eram inicialmente vendidos via pedido pelos correios, mas posteriormente foram lançados através do selo CBS devido à sua demanda popular. Os álbuns focam-se exclusivamente em Frank Zappa como solista de guitarra, e a maioria das faixas foi gravada ao vivo em 1979 e 1980; elas trazem as habilidades de improviso de Zappa com "lindas performances do grupo de apoio também".

Em maio de 1982, Zappa lançou Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch, que apresentava o seu single mais bem vendido em toda a sua carreira, a canção "Valley Girl", indicada para o Grammy Award e que chegou ao número 32 nos rankings da Billboard. Em suas letras improvisadas para a canção, a filha de Zappa Moon Unit satirizou a fala monótona de garotas adolescentes de San Fernando Valley, as quais popularizaram muitas expressões "Valspeaks" (expressão que se refere à fala de garotas californianas da década de 1980). Muitos americanos que apenas conheciam Zappa de alguns singles de sucesso agora pensavam nele como uma pessoa que escrevia canções de humor, apesar de o resto do álbum conter muitas músicas complexas. Zappa ficou irritado com isso e nunca mais tocou a canção ao vivo.

    * Track 1 has Zappa talking to the audience for about 40 seconds, in London 19-Jun-1982 (first show). In a discussion on alt.fan.frank-zappa in March 2000 about "the dumbest or most embarassing thing Zappa said on stage", it was one of two things that came up. It goes like this:

        "You know, as I look out here tonight, I see all these people and wonder what kind of people actually come to a show like this, and I know! Usually it's a bunch of guys who think that maybe it's cool to come here, and then they bring these girls along that wouldn't be caught dead in a place like this, listening to this shitty kind of music, and they sit there and grit their fucking teeth for two hours, and then maybe later they give the guy a blowjob. Well let me tell you something; all you guys that brought girls like this to this kind of a concert, I hope you do get blown by those lock-jawed little bitches that you brought in here." 



Em 1983, dois projetos diferentes foram lançados: Começando com The Man From Utopia, um trabalho orientado ao rock. O álbum é eclético, apresentando os temas cantados "Dangerous Kitchen" e "The Jazz Discharge Party Hats", ambos continuações das excursões do estilo sprechstimme de Tinseltown Rebellion. O segundo álbum, London Symphony Orchestra, Vol. 1, contém composições orquestrais de Zappa dirigidas por Kent Nagano e tocadas pela Orquestra Sinfônica de Londres. Uma segunda parte dessas sessões, London Symphony Orchestra, Vol. 2 foi lançada em 1987. O material foi gravado em um calendário apertado com Zappa o financiando, ajudado pelo sucesso comercial de "Valley Girl".[160] Zappa não ficou satisfeito com as gravações com a orquestra. Uma razão foi "Strictly Genteel", a qual foi gravada depois de que os músicos dos trompetes tinham bebido no intervalo. A faixa foi editada quarenta vezes para esconder notas fora do tom. O maestro Nagano, que estava satisfeito com a experiência, comentou que "sendo justo com a orquestra, a música era humanamente muito, muito difícil". Algumas avaliações observaram que as gravações eram a melhor representações do trabalho orquestral de Zappa até então.

Neon Pearl - British Psychedelic Songs from the 60's



Finalmente o grande colaborador Peter Hammil retorna ao Valvulado. Após percorrer o submundo do Rock Progressivo e flertar com o Jazz, Peter nos brinda com um discaço do Rock Psicodélico britãnico. Som de primeira, como sempre... "You Can Hear Your Dream Scream!!!!!



Neon Pearl was a 1960s British psychedelic band consisting of Peter Dunton (vocals/guitar/keyboards/drums), Bernard Jinks (bass guitar/backing vocals) and Nick Spenser (guitar/harmonium/keyboards). They were formed to play as a resident band in a club in Germany, but returned to England in late 1967. In 1967, Neon Pearl recorded a number of studio songs but could not find a record contract. In 2001, Acme released them as the album 1967 Recordings , which is a fine example of experimental British psychedelia with its hazy riffs, mild guitar distortions and vocal harmonies. Dunton was also in the marginally less obscure British psychedelic bands the Flies and Please, while Jinks later played in Bulldog Breed and T2, the latter also including Dunton.
