Donovan with David Gilmour

Donovan Philips Leitch (normalmente chamado apenas de Donovan) (nascido em 10 de maio de 1946) é um músico britânico. Emergente do cenário folk inglês, Donovan ficou famoso depois de uma série de apresentações em programas de TV. Seu sucesso inicialmente ficou restrito ao Reino Unido, mas depois de assinar com a Epic Records americana e juntar forças com o produtor Mickie Most, ele desenvolveu um estilo eclético e bem-sucedido, que incorporava folk, jazz, pop, psicodelismo e world music. Donovan rapidemente tornou-se um dos mais famosos e populares artistas britânicos de sua época, produzindo uma série de sucessos entre 1966 e 1970. Ele também tornou-se amigo próximo dos Beatles, sendo um dos poucos a colaborar em suas músicas,além disso, foi ele quem ensinou John Lennon a tocar violão dedilhado. A fama de Donovan começou a se esvair depois que ele separou de Most em 1969, e, embora ele tenha continuado a tocar durante os anos 70 e 80, seu estilo musical calmo e sua imagem hippie passaram a ser severamente atacados pela crítica, principalmente depois do surgimento do punk rock. Em 1990, Donovan grava um álbum com David Gilmour e por motivos não muito claros, este álbum não é lançado na época, sendo re-acessdo somente em 2002. Este misterioso álbum chamado de Celtia, nem consta em sua discografia oficial.

· Celtia is an unreleased album that was recorded around 1990. There's no record of this album until 2003, in issue number 17 of Pat Hehir's fanzine, Donovan's Friends. Suddenly, in that year of 2003 the album is supposed to be on sale, under the fictitious Durga Records label.

· There's no reliable proof about this fact, and there is no evidence that Durga Records ever released Celtia, you run into the same story over and over again on the Internet when looking for information about this album, which is probably based on Pat Hehir's statements in Donovan's Friends. It's more likely that this was another of Pat Hehir's bootleg releases, masqueraded as an official release, as it was only available through the fanzine and Pat Hehir's website. This was not the first time that Mr. Hehir did that, as he did the same with One Night In Time and Greatest Hits Live: Vancouver 1986. Donovan didn't get a single penny for any of this albums.

· According to Pat Hehir, after the disappointment of One Night In Time not being released, he took Donovan to Ireland to start a new project: Celtia. Hehir and Donovan went into Sulan studios, in southern Ireland, with a bunch of magnificent but not very known musicians, to join Donovan. Like in the old times, it took them just eight days to record the whole album. These songs were more rehearsal songs never intended for issue, until Hehir decided otherwise.

· The Ferryman's Daughter was first recorded around 1968, this early version was included on Disc 3 of 2005 magnificent compilation Try For The Sun: The Journey Of Donovan. The first time this song ever appeared on a Donovan record was for the album Live In Japan: Spring Tour 1973.

· An earlier version of Madrigalinda was recorded for 1980 album Neutronica.

· Lover O Lover was originally released on the album Love Is Only Feeling, and later re-recorded for the Beat Café album in 2004.

· Everlasting Sea was later re-recorded and included on the album Sutras.

Can You Dig It? The Music and Politics of Black Action Movies (1968 - 1975)

''Can You Dig It?' is as definitive as it gets, and treats its subject seriously, lovingly and with an attention to detail. ‘Can You Dig It?’ charts the rise of ‘Black Action Films’ from 1970-75. It comes as a double-CD collection of the stunning music from these films. The vinyl is on two monster loud separate double albums. The Black Action Films of the early 1970s gave the Hollywood industry its first African-American cinema – actors, directors, cameramen, editors and writers. These films discussed aspects of the African-American experience in the form of entertainment. Storylines interwove post-civil rights revolution with action stories, many involving pimps, prostitutes, drug dealers or private detectives. The films also featured the finest funk and soul black music of the time as stars such as James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Willie Hutch and Roy Ayers produced some of their finest work, with film budgets allowing for the addition of huge orchestral arrangements by jazz legends such as Quincy Jones, Johnny Pate and JJ Johnson. 

In the early 1970s, Black Action Films exploded into the cinema with three extremely successful films – ‘Shaft’, ‘Super Fly’ and ‘Sweet Sweetback’s Badasssss Song’. The most profound statement of these films was their actual existence – black actors and black directors entering the previously closed Hollywood film industry. Black Action Films were a representation of politically everything that had gone before and stylistically of everything that was current. Civil rights, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Black Power, Black Panthers, Vietnam sit alongside the criminal worlds of policemen, private investigators, bail bondsmen and the criminals, drug dealers, pimps and hustlers that they parole. ‘Can U Dig It?’ brings you everything you always wanted to know about black action films.  This is an essential Soul Jazz Records release!

Who is Peter Hammil?

Peter Joseph Andrew Hammill (5 de Novembro de 1948) é um músico britânico e um membro fundador da Van der Graaf Generator. Embora seja conhecido pelas suas habilidades vocais, também toca guitarra e piano. É um competente produtor de discos, produzindo os seus próprios e ocasionalmente para outros músicos. A carreira solo de Peter co-existiu com a do Van der Graaf Generator. Em 1968, um contrato da Mercury Records foi oferecido à banda, mas somente Hammil assinou. Quando o Van der Graaf quebrou o contrato em 1969, Peter seguiu com a gravadora em seu primeiro projeto solo. No verão de 1969, Hammil vivia no The Lyceum e realizava concertos solo, semanalmente. Seu primeiro "solo" saiu com o nome da banda  (The Aerosol Grey Machine). Seu primeiro solo foi Fool's Mate (1971), contendo canções da época anterior ao Van der Graaf Generator (1967-1968).

Quando Van der Graaf se separou novamente em Agosto de 1972, Hammil utilizou suas composições da banda em seus álbuns solo. Desta forma, era difícil separar seu trabalho solo da banda. Contudo, de maneira geral, os discos solo de Peter abordavam temas pessoais, eram mais introspectivos, enquanto que as composições para a banda, abordavam temas mais gerais. O álbum Nadir's Big Chance de 1975 representa uma grande mudança de estilo dos álbuns anteriores. Este álbum é considerado uma antecipação ao Punk Rock. John Lydon do Sex Pistols, após cantar duas canções deste álbum, fez a seguinte declaração em uma entrevista de rádio:

"Peter Hammill's great. A true original. I've just liked him for years. If you listen to him, his solo albums, I'm damn sure Bowie copied a lot out of that geezer. The credit he deserves, just has not been given to him. I love all his stuff"

Nadir's Big Chance (1975)

O álbum de 1978, The Future Now, traz também algumas alterações no estilo de Peter Hammil. Este álbum contém 12 canções, relativamente mais curtas, e no estilo New Wave. Algumas composições também originalmente programadas para o Van der Graaf Generator que acabaram em seu trabalho solo.

De 1981 a 1983, Hammil tocou com o K Group, basicamente um Rock New Wave. Em Março e abril de 1983, Hammil com John Ellis participou do tour do Marillion, em seu álbum de estréia, Script for a Jester's Tear. Em 1986, Peter laça Skin, utilizando pela primeira vez, um sintetizador  Yamaha DX7, o teclado símbolo dos anos 80.

Fantastic Funk - Vol. I

Goldmine/Soul Supply is the U.K. label that put together the stellar Sound of Funk series, compiling a host of terrific deep funk rarities for the groove-obsessed collector. Fantastic Funk, Vol. 1 is a worthy addition to that legacy, gathering 16 more obscure, infectious funk singles from what seems like an inexhaustible supply. Unlike many deep funk comps, there's a hefty preponderance of vocal performances on this one, which helps give it a bit more personality. Many, many bonus points are awarded just for the inclusion of deep funk legend Lee Fields' "Funky Screw," a would-be dance craze every bit as priceless as its title suggests. Elsewhere, Julia DeWitt gets into an endearingly involved monologue on the cheating tale "If You Want Your Man," which features the oughta-be-a-classic line "Now who in the world ever heard of a nurse's aide convention?!" There's also a solo cut by Sam Moore of Sam & Dave, "Can You Dig It," which interpolates a bit of "Soul Man" in what seems like a desperate bid for recognition. Terrific grooves abound throughout the set, supporting lyrics about love, philosophy, and just plain dancing. More proof that Goldmine is perhaps the most reliable deep funk reissue label around.

It's not Country, it's not Rock, It's not Jazz... It's GENESIS!!!!

Como todos já sabem, em 1975, Peter Gabriel deixou o Genesis. Após a gravação do épico "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", Peter se sentiu esgotado. Após 7 anos, sentia que sua criatividade estava limitada dentro do grupo e, como muitos outros músicos, seguiu para a carreira solo. Após este evento, o Genesis nunca mais foi o mesmo. Embora tenham tentado, os discos seguintes lembravam Genesis em algum momento, mas era outro grupo, até se consolidar com uma imagem mais Pop. Turning On Again, Follow You, Follow Me, Misunderstanding foram hits e eram músicas muito bem elaboradas e tocadas, mas não era o Genesis original. O grupo sem Peter Gabriel ganhou as rádios, se tornou mais famoso, porém os fãs do antigo Genesis assistiram tudo com aquele saudosismo triste... Ainda tinham o Genesis, mas tinha um outro gosto.

Peter Gabriel, também seguiu outro caminho. Seus primeiros álbuns eram altamente experimentais. Musicalmente excelentes, mas mesmo com a voz do Genesis, não era o Genesis. Mas o homem era um furacão de idéias trazendo todas para seus álbuns, e liderou-criou muitos projetos. Gabriel promoveu todos os seus álbuns com turnês, nas quais, cada vez mais percebia-se o emprego de recursos e conceitos originais, coreografias, tecnologia de ponta, e a redução do uso de maquiagens e da flauta que tanto o celebrizaram na época do Genesis. Para uma das turnês, toda sua banda raspou a cabeça. E assim foi até 1982, Peter Gabriel trazendo idéias inovadoras, criando, tendo alguns hits de sucesso, e o Genesis se consolidando como uma banda de Prog-Pop.

Em 1982, contudo, Peter Gabriel estava à beira da falência devido ao seu patrocínio ao festival internacional de artes chamado "World of Music, Arts and Dance" (WOMAD). A situação era tão grave que Peter Gabriel foi jurado de morte por pessoas ligadas aos demais credores do festival. Ao saber desta situação grave, Tony Smith, na época empresário do Genesis, teve a idéia de fazer uma reunião do Genesis antigo. Tudo o grupo aceitou de imediatoe, em outubro de 1982, Peter Gabriel se reuniu ao Genesis para um show exclusivo, chamado Six of the Best, no estádio Milton Keynes, na Inglaterra.  Assim, ele, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett, Daryl Stuermer e Chester Thompson se apresentaram juntos em 29 de setembro e 2 de outubro daquele ano e conseguiram a renda necessária para Gabriel normalizar sua situação, não ser assassinado, não perder sua gravadora e editora de música (Real World Records) e levar adiante sua carreira. O show foi apresentado por Jonathan King, o produtor do álbum de estreia do conjunto.

E, apesar de todas as tensões da separação, da busca de um novo caminho, e dos estresses deste mundo musical, o Genesis mostrou que não foi só uma das maiores bandas de Rock Progressivo. Estava ali para estender a mão e ajudar Peter Gabriel. E é disto que se trata este post. Dois bootlegs deste maravilhoso show, desta épica reunião. Os fãs, morrendo de saudades do Genesis antigo, de repente recebem a notícia de que Peter Gabriel voltou, em apenas um show... Dá para ouvir no primeiro Bootleg, os gritos e a emoção. Embora o primeiro bootleg não tenha a qualidade do segundo, vale a pena por ouvir uma platéia levada a loucura, e um depoimento de Peter Gabriel emocionado...
