The World Ends - Afro Rock & Psychedelia in 1970s Nigeria

The World Ends is the latest title from Soundway Records showcasing a wave of guitar driven and psychedelic groups that sprung up in Nigeria during the early 1970s. Featuring 32 electrifying and funk laden grooves, this is the sound of a generation attempting to pick up the pieces after the devastation of the Nigerian civil war. Spread over 2 CDs , this bumper collection is brimming with youthful exuberance, fuzzed out guitar and cosmic organ vibes and owes much to the psychedelic sounds of Jim Morrison, Santana, Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane and James Brown. As the summer of love was blossoming in London and San Francisco, Nigeria was imploding into civil war. Also known as the Biafran war of 1967, it was a grisly conflict taking over three million lives yet at the same time as the country was being pulled apart there was a new world beginning. The tracks featured represent a forgotten chapter in Nigeria's musical history when the youth threw their varied morsels into the pot from hard rock to psychedelic soul when guitars were cherished instruments, symbolic of a new movement, when highlife and Afrobeat played second fiddle to 'the beat'.

Don Blackman (September 1, 1953 – April 11, 2013) was an American jazz-funk pianist, singer, and songwriter. He performed with Louis Hayes, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Nicolas Dietz. Blackman was born and raised in Jamaica, Queens, NY. A childhood neighbor was Charles McPherson, and while still a teenager he played in McPherson's ensemble with Sam Jones and Louis Hayes. At the beginning of the 1970s, he played with Parliament/Funkadelic, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Roy Ayers, before becoming a member of Lenny White's group Twennynine, for whom he penned songs such as "Peanut Butter" and "Morning Sunrise". He released his self-titled debut solo album in 1982 on Arista Records, including the songs "Holding You, Loving You", "Heart's Desire" and "Since You've Been Away So Long" that became minor hits in Europe.

Blackman also worked as a session musician, appearing on albums by Kurtis Blow (Kingdom Blow), Bernard Wright, Najee, David Sanborn, Lenny White, Roy Ayers, Sting (Brand New Day), World Saxophone Quartet, Janet Jackson's "That's the Way Love Goes" (Remix) and Wayman Tisdale. He wrote the composition "Haboglabotribin", which appeared on Bernard Wright's album Nard and was sampled by Snoop Dogg in the song "G'z and Hustlaz", Tupac Shakur's album R U Still Down? (Remember Me), and is a featured song in the video game Grand Theft Auto V. Other compositions include "Dear Summer", which appeared on Memphis Bleek's album 534 featuring Jay-Z, and "Holding You, Loving You", which appeared on Master P.'s album I Got The Hook Up.

On television, he scored and wrote music for commercials, TV shows, and movies, appearing on Fox Network's New York Undercover, producing and writing the theme song for Nickelodeon's show "Gullah Gullah Island", as well as producing songs for the MTV Network movie Joe's Apartment.

In 1992 PSE released Cosmic Funky Explosion EP (PopGod) which was a gallant experimentation in soft psychedelic funk, though not as successful as their 1993 EP the groundbreaking Diggin at the Dig In (PopGod). Made with members of (Bristol Latin Trip Hop stylists) Up, Bustle and Outy, the record featured looped up dance mixes of the track and has been played out by DJs all over the world.

This track was taken from a somewhat muddy sounding yet interesting LP called 2 Demons Leaving (Delerium Records '93). The band had been growing and by 1993 was often a nine piece group featuring two drum kits -due to Toby finding his own replacement (called Errol) but then re-joining to play along-;three extra vocalists; a synth wizard (Dieter Hertwig) and a Hammond organist (Dr Mark Underhill) all of whom contribute to this album.

The band continued to tour and blow minds until The Moonflowers moved to France in 1994 and spent the Summer recording. PSE took advantage of two weeks of this time and created their finest album Mushroom Jazz (Delerium). This record was finished and mixed in Bristol at the end of 1995 and features playing from many other talents. Unfortunately, due to bassist Sam living in Normandy, drummer Toby in North Wales, keyboardist Dieter in Australia and guitarist Jesse in Bristol, the group found it slightly impractical to continue! The album was finally released in Sept 1997 only on CD.

Che was the solo recording alias of Alix Plain (born Alex Johnson), who previously led Liverpool's Modern Eon, an overlooked post-punk band of the late '70s and early '80s. After Modern Eon broke up, four-fifths of the group continued as This Time Next Year while Plain opted to go solo. Signed to Desire, he debuted his Che project in 1983 with the What You've Been Through Is Love 12" single. A couple years passed until 1989's full-length Narcotic. Supported by a pair of 12" singles, the album was produced by On-U Sound's Adrian Sherwood; it also featured instrumental help from Sherwood's cronies (and Sugar Hill veterans) Skip McDonald, Doug Wimbish, and Keith LeBlanc.

"Light funk ranging from atmospheric to a lighter version of the On-U sound. Some excellent moments, but watch out for a couple of the more dance-oriented tracks." [I love that: Watch out! Someone listening to college radio might be moved to dance! Danger!]
