Dylan & The Dead (Psych Folk Rock)

Dylan & the Dead is a collaborative live album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead, released on February 6, 1989 by Columbia Records. The album consists of seven songs written and sung by Dylan, with the Grateful Dead providing accompaniment. The album was produced by Jerry Garcia and John Cutler.

Dylan & the Dead was recorded in 1987, during a successful stadium tour of the same name, that featured the two artists performing separately and together. Songs from two of the Grateful Dead's performances from the tour are documented on the album and video View from the Vault IV, and one of the tour-rehearsal songs is on the album Postcards of the Hanging.

Though ultimately poorly received, the album initially sold well, reaching No.  37 on the Billboard charts in the U.S., No.  38 in the UK, and earning a Gold certification in the U.S.

In 1992, a bootleg of the first concert of the tour was released under the title "Orbiting Uvula". It includes the first-ever live performance of "Queen Jane Approximately", the first live performance of "John Brown" since 1963, and the first live performance of "Chimes of Freedom" since 1964.

Scarecrow - Hard Rock (UK)

SCARECROW rose from the ashes of late 60’s/early '70's Psych/Prog band INFORMATION which included Vocalist/Guitarist John Stewart & drummer Dave Ramsey. That band toured Europe & the UK intensively, playing alongside the likes of Manfred Mann & Jimi Hendrix, and also released two ultra scarce singles, "Orphan" in 1969 & "Lovely To See You" in 1970. Scarecrow were formed by Stewart & Ramsey in 1973 or 1974 with Bassist Clive Yeats and Guitarist Bill Puplett completing the line-up. By 1976 the band had replaced Yeats with Dick Williamson and had become a regular fixture on the London pub & club circuit. With all members being from London, (rare in itself in the capital), this allowed them to play over 300 gigs per year, without travelling too far from the capital for any of them. The experience that this brought showed; a good solid rhythm section, twin/harmony guitars, plus lead guitar/vocals, all underpinned by solid rhythm/melody guitar, and set them apart.

By 1977 they had well over 2 albums worth of original songs written & road tested and the live vibe was well established. It was only a matter of time (and funding) before these songs would be committed to vinyl. They had already recorded material in various studios by ‘77, but these were never released. Despite Scarecrow finding themselves in the midst of the “Punk” revolution they acquired quite a cult following. In early 1978 things were moving fast and it was suggested that they should record and release a live LP. All this came together over the Easter of 1978 when gigs at The Marquee & The Brecknock were recorded and eventually used to compile the LP. The self-titled album was released on the band's own Spilt Milk label just before Christmas 1978. The LP, lasting over 45 minutes, featured six lengthy original songs which came from that mythical 50+ song repertoire. As one reviewer of the time put it, “English rock music played with style and grace”. The LP was enjoyed by fans and collectors alike and within a couple of years was already changing hands for high prices. The record was housed in a six panel wrap-around sleeve, and came with two stickers, a bio sheet & a fan club newsletter, in a limited numbered pressing of just 1000 copies. Because of the record's unusual sleeve design it's now extremely difficult to find a mint copy of the LP with the sleeve & included ephemera intact & in good condition. NWoBHM collectors later picked up on the record, viewing it as an early example of the form. The album has never been oficially re-issued although a German company did counterfeit it, releasing it on CD as "Live". The group made several more studio recordings in the early 80’s but again, none of these were ever released and by late '82 the band was no more.

Mike Nyoni & Born Free - Psych Afro Rock

Zambian guitarist and singer/songwriter Mike Nyoni’s music is Zamrock only because he came of age during the country’s rock revolution. His preferred wah-wah to fuzz guitar, James Brown to Jimi Hendrix. His 70s recordings – often politically charged, and ranging from despondent to exuberant – are amongst the funkiest on the African continent. He was also one of the only Zamrock musicians to see his music contemporaneously issued in Europe.

This anthology collates works from his three 70s LPs – his first, with the Born Free band, and his two solo albums Kawalala and I Can’t Understand You – and presents a singular Zambian musician on par with celebrated artists Rikki Ililonga, Keith Mlevhu and Paul Ngozi.

The latest release in Now-Again's deluxe Reserve Edition series: the first ever anthology of Zamrock musician Mike Nyoni's funky, psych-rock and folkloric 1970s recordings spread over 2 CDs. Zambian guitarist and singer/songwriter Mike Nyoni's music is Zamrock only because he came of age during the country's rock revolution. His preferred wah-wah to fuzz guitar, James Brown to Jimi Hendrix. His 70s recordings often politically charged, and ranging from despondent to exuberant are amongst the funkiest on the African continent. This anthology collates works from his three 70s LPs his first, with the Born Free band, and his two solo albums Kawalala and I Can't Understand You and presents a singular Zambian musician on par with celebrated artists Rikki Ililonga, Keith Mlevhu and Paul Ngozi. The package also features an extensive, photo-filled booklet contains an overview of the Zamrock scene and Nyoni's story.

Wonderfully trippy sounds from Mike Nyoni – one of the funkier talents in the Zamrock scene of the 70s – even though he also works with lots of the slight psychedelic touches of other contemporaries too! Mike's style on guitar is a bit too loose to be funk, but it's also got this nice rhythmic pulse that keeps things interesting – and some of the cuts pick up the rhythms a bit more, so that there's some snapping currents that make for a great contrast with his offbeat vocals and weirdly wobbly way of singing! As always with Now Again, the reissue of this material is a great lost treasure – handled perfectly, with great sound and detailed notes that really do justice to the music – on titles that include "I Don't Know", "Come Back To Me", "My Dear Girl", "Messed Day", "Mad Man", "My Own Thing", "Coming Home", "It's Only A Dream", and "Soweto". 2CD set features all three of Mike's rare albums – Born Free, I Can't Understand You, and Kawalala.  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Link Wray - Folk Rock

Fred Lincoln "Link" Wray, Jr. (May 2, 1929 – November 5, 2005) was a Shawnee rock and roll guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist who became popular in the late 1950s. Building on the distorted electric guitar sound of early records, his 1958 instrumental hit "Rumble" by Link Wray & His Ray Men popularized "the power chord, the major modus operandi of modern rock guitarists," facilitating the emergence of "punk and heavy rock". Rolling Stone placed Wray at No. 45 of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. In 2013 and 2017 he was a nominee for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Though he began in country music, his musical style went on to consist primarily of rock and roll, rockabilly, and instrumental rock.

Link Wray is the self-titled 1971 album by pioneer Rock & Roll guitarist Link Wray. The music is an Americana blend of blues, country, gospel, and folk rock elements. This music is characterized by the purposeful use of simplified sounds to reflect the then-current vogue of blues and other roots music being used in many roots rock bands. Wray's guitar-work, composing, and vocals reflected modern rock influences. Despite publicity from radio stations and print media in the Washington area, the album did not do well in national sales.

Some tracks from this album later surfaced on the compilation Guitar Preacher: The Polydor Years, and it was included in its entirety on 2CDs compilation Wray's Three Track Shack (Acadia/Evangeline Recorded Works Ltd./Universal Music, 2005) along with other "shack" recordings of '71 Beans and Fatback and Mordicai Jones. The Neville Brothers later covered "Fire and Brimstone" on their album Yellow Moon, as did Nick Cave and Ralph Stanley for the soundtrack of the film Lawless. The band Calexico covered "Fallin' Rain" as bonus track on their album Feast of Wire. Karl Blau covered "Fallin' Rain" on his 2016 covers album Introducing Karl Blau . The Neville Brothers also covered "Fallin' Rain" on their album Brother's Keeper.
